Description:

SharePoint 2010 development is now a first class citizen with a new level of tool support in Visual Studio 2010. This session will demonstrate the basics steps to create a SharePoint project, configure a solution package, and create and work with project items like features and the new visual web part. Debugging, LINQ to SharePoint, and considerations for working with stand-alone applications will also be discussed.

I’m Speaking at SharePoint Saturday Perth this February

How exciting—our very first SharePoint Saturday event in Perth! A BIG shout out to Jeremy Thake for organising the venue, speakers, sponsors, prizes, and everything else! The speaker line-up looks fantastic and the sessions cover a range of topics so I reckon this is going to be a great day.

In addition to attending the event, I’ll also be presenting on the subject of SharePoint list development. Here’s the official blurb for my talk:

Lists are key to understanding the power of the SharePoint platform and provide core data storage and management facilities in a SharePoint environment. Lists can be customised to suit custom requirements but doing so isn’t always straightforward.

Learn how to create, deploy, manage, and interact with SharePoint lists in this jam-packed session. Discussion will cover the pros and cons of using SharePoint lists before focusing on methods for creating and deploying lists between environments in a repeatable manner; techniques for working with lists and data using the SharePoint API with also be demonstrated.

Existing experience with the SharePoint UI, a cursory knowledge of content types, and ASP.NET development experience is recommended but not assumed.

Zoom for presentations

Sysinternals: what’s not to love?!

I was setting up for a demo today and noticed the client’s projector was too close to the screen and the overall result was a hard-to-read display. The Windows screen magnifier (whatever it’s called) doesn’t really cut it so on a whim I hit Google and came up with ZoomIt.

129KB later and no installer I can hit CTRL+1 and this thing zooms in to my mouse; wiggle my mouse around and the zoom follows. Esc to zoom out again.

Simple. Beautiful. Perfect.

Presenting at the next SharePoint User Group Presentation

Just a reminder I’ll be delivering part two of my two-part presentation on how we do web content management on MOSS 2007 this Tuesday at 12:30pm. We had a great turnout for the first presentation so it will be interesting to see who comes back!! Honestly, it’s amazing how many of you SharePoint/MOSS guys I’ve met through the first presentation and I’m really looking forward to bumping into a few more of you—please come up and say hello!

The blurb on the user group site is a straight copy of the part one blurb so here’s what I’ll be talking about tomorrow:

westernaustralia.com was one of the first public-facing MOSS 2007-based internet sites launched in Australia and is billed as the Western Australia Tourism Commission’s flagship web site. Two years on and thirty MCMS 2002-based tourism sites are now being migrated to the MOSS 2007 platform. In the second segment of this two part presentation, Michael Hanes, the Development Coordinator/Tech Lead at Tourism WA, talks about the backend MOSS environments. In this presentation Michael presents the existing and replacement hardware environments, virtualisation, environment structure, farm configuration, security, site collection structure and variations, performance, tooling, content delivery (Akamai), and content deployment.

Jeremy’s aiming to record the presentation again so, all being well, the part two webcast will be available after the event in case you’re unable to come along.

SharePoint User Group Presentation Web Cast Now Online!

If you weren't able to make it to part one of the presentation I gave at last week's Perth SharePoint User Group meeting, a web cast is now showing on a web tube near you. The subject matter is all about how we build internet-facing web sites on the MOSS platform at Tourism Western Australia and some of the big lessons we've learned along the way.

How We Do WCM at Tourism WA: I'm Speaking at the Perth SharePoint Users Group Meeting this Month!

I'll be speaking at the Perth SharePoint User Group this month on the subject of all things westernaustralia.com (as far as MOSS 2007 and WCM go). I know a fair number of you out there but if you're in Perth and have a chance to come along, I'd love to meeting you in person. This is the first of two presentations (it's also my first ever user group presentation...) and will be somewhat dev focused with a lot of explanation around how we things and why we do them the way we do. If you're considering a move to MOSS for your internet site (or an intranet), this session is for you.
